If you like to see your plant in bloom, the best time to trim is when your blossom begins to change Color or the petals begin to fall. I use rose trimmers, bur a sharp pair of scissors will do. be sure to trim back to the....y.... part of the stem. This way you will not harm future growth and new stems with buds. did you know that roses like very ripened chopped banana peels just carefully put in the root area with about 2' of soil over them ? Enjoy

Some rose specific plant food probably would not hurt either.

This is the first year I planted roses. I live in PA. Will they survive well through the winter?

I have read that you should not prune any flowers within 6 weeks of the first frost. I live in Michigan. I don't do anything to mine and they are fine. But they are in a corner. Some people put those white rose cones over them and mulch them. You have to be careful about using leaves as mulch because this can cause some diseases.

Reply:yes they will.. roses are very hardy plants.. if you planted the roses just this last summer, a good rule of thumb is not to cut them too much the first year... i don't know your area.. but i prune in Jan-Feb (call your local nursery to find out the time for your area) when it is time, do a minimal pruning.. and take all the leaves off.. you still want the roses to go dormant.. and add some rose fertilizer.. if you live in a snow area, add some mulch to the ball (on the bottom of the rose is a knot, then the branches come up.. this is basically the heart of the rose..) Make sure you move it away come spring..

I know that red stand for love and yellow means friendship. But, what about colors like white and pink? I'm planting some roses in my front yard. I would like to give it a nice setting. What do you think?

I prefer to go for meaning and what is pleasing to look at, so I choose the meanings most important and then colors that go well together. Good luck planning your rose planting!

How long will it take to start seeing roses from my rose bushes?
I purchased 4 rose bushes from Walmart. I planted them this weekend but no where does it tell me how long it will take before I start seeing the roses. I am sort of impatient when it comes to these things :)

first it depends whether u planted them in the right place - roses like sun. so if a place is shadowy u might never see the flowers. also how big the rose bush was - was it just a few sticks with buds, a bew sticks with leaves or the whole bush? was it sold in a real deep pot? or in a plastic bag? if it was a real bush in a pot and u planted it correctly u will see flowers this autumn. if those were a few sticks in a plastic bag - hopefully next year. if they don't die in winter

What can I do about Beetles eating my Roses?
I have no idea what kind of beetle this is, but there are multiple beetles in each rose. Just before it starts to really bloom they all cluster inside and eat my roses! What can I do?
