Bugs eat my roses every summer. what can i do to make them stop?

they munch up my roses and make them look horrible :( any suggestions? i dont even know what kind of bugs they are tho, i just have a bunch of holy roses every year!

Sounds like Japanese Beetles, buy White Geraniums and plant around roses, I don't know why but it does work

Reply:i found the best way to get good roses is to spray them with formula 409, don't know why it works but its great stuff
Reply:I use Bug-Be-Gone, I forget who makes it, I think it is Scotts. The same company who makes fertilizer, not 100% positive. But it is called Bug-Be-Gone.


I have used it on flowers, shrubs, brush, hedges, small little trees I gow in those whisky barrels. It workd great kills of any bug that tries to eat it. It is easy to use, just put on a glove, grab a handful and sprinle it all over the plant. It also, dies not damage plants and they will grow back from the damage done by the bugs.

Reply:I use a grub control in the spring, then use sprays in the summer, japanese bettles start as grubs
Reply:Get a spray bottle and mix with water and 25% dishsoap and spray on the roses. You will see the bugs leave asap!!.

Seriously, it really depends on what's causing your problems. Least damaging all around (and it works surprisingly well!) is just a good blast with the garden hose every day.





Other than that, you could consider a systemic pesticide -- that wouldn't be my choice, because of toxicity and resistance issues, but it's still a possibility.





I'd urge you to identify the critter(s) causing your rose problems and then figure out the least toxic, most targeted methods for control. Here are some starters:

Reply:The type of bug makes a difference. While you can spray BT on the roses and that will hurt most bugs, you want to know if it earwigs (meaning you need to clean up the ground more) or Japanese beetles (maybe hang a pheremone trap on the other side of the yard), or something else. It is good to only kill off what you hate, and not take out the bees and butterflies while you are at it.
