What are the BEST and UNIQUE roses arrangements to give for Valentines?

I want to be unique for this Valentines. Whats common right now is a dozen red roses, or 2 dozen red roses.

I want to be unique. Like I saw 5-6 foot roses somewhere on the internet. One other person suggested 100 roses. Another one suggested roses in a heart form.

What are the BEST and UNIQUE roses arrangements to give for Valentines?
I think it would be most creative/unique to do an arrangement NOT made of roses, or to do a more unusual breed of roses...

Latin Ladies are stunning in my opinion, red on the tops of the petals, and white on the bottoms. (they are also called fire and ice)

Black Magic roses have a lot of depth and are a very rich color:

You could also do a unique color like lavender roses

http://stores.floweretc.net/catalog/1036...

Whatever you do, do it from the heart! Good luck.
Reply:Even more unique - give the person orchids or some rare flowers.
Reply:I wouldnt get the 100 roses, because lets face it- they will wilt! I've thought of the best idea...and I dont care if you steal it lol, it might be what ur looking for! I think the heart formation is perfect for this. Get all red roses in a heart shape, and in the middle of the bunch put a fake rose.

Then attach a note saying 'My love for you will only end when the last rose wilts'.

Which of course- will never happen as it is a fake rose. You follow?

If my university course doesnt work out maybe I should work for Hallmark lol ;-) Happy V Day

How do you transplant these roses?

They are wild roses. Here is a picture of the wild roses, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosa_arkans... . There are about 100 of them outside growing along the road and in the ditch. How can I transplant them into my yard? They are blooming right now, I transplanted 2 a couple of weeks ago, but they are not doing to good. They are alive, but are not blooming. And one of them only has a couple of leaves. What should i do?What is the best way to transplant them and keep them alive and blooming? I transplanted 1 today, and i shouldn't have because it was really hot. I got most of a thick root with it, its doing ok, kinda wilted. I watered it good. Some one told me about cutting off the dead canes, but i don't know what a cane is. Thanks in advance.

How do you transplant these roses?
These are wild roses- that means weeds. Don't worry so much. Water them if they get wilty looking, but they should do just fine. I love them too and have a huge clump in my back yard that started off real iffy looking. Have faith they will grow.
Reply:If you want them to have a better chance to survive-- do this.

Take a sharp shovel and about 10-12 inches from the main stem, push the shovel into the ground the depth of the shovel-- making a circle around the plant. Mark your calendar. 6 weeks after the shovel trick-- go back and lift the plant and move it where you want. As you back fill the hole, ( put the dirt back around the transplant) run your hose into the hole-- which trickles mud around to fill any air pockets.

This is what you did--- by "cutting" roots around the plant and waiting for 6 weeks-- you force the plant to put out new feeder roots to feed itself. Then you can move it with great chance of success. Don't ignore it after transplanting -- watch for drooping leaves-- which show it is short of water.

A cane is a branch of a rose-- you will see old dry big ones and young light green ones. You do want to cut back the blooms-- because the plant is trying to make seeds-- Both cutting back and transplanting at the same time is harder on the plant. Any plant does three things-- roots, leaves, seeds (flowers/reproduction of itself)-- you need the leaves to feed the roots and you need the roots to strengthen the plant. The blooms will come next year.

What is the best time of year to plant roses in N. California?

I want to plant some ground cover roses....but it seems I can't find any around. Went to Navalet's in Fremont and of course Lowe's and Home Depot, but none really to be found? Should they not be planted at this time?

What is the best time of year to plant roses in N. California?
I think the reason you are having trouble finding roses is that the time for planting is past. Usually roses are planted bare-root in January or February when they are dormant. In May many roses have already started to bloom.

The American Rose Society link below has information and tips on rose cultivation in several geographic areas of California.

Good Luck!
Reply:Now is the best time. Spring time. Roses are very hardy and last for years. Try a regular Nursery if Lowes or HD don't carry them. I just planted some and the have lots of buds already.
Reply:right now! the frosty part of spring is over with!

Why does my roses bloom with dead pedals?

When my roses bloom the pedals look as if they were dying. All nasty and brown looking.

Why does my roses bloom with dead pedals?
Rose leaves with dark patches on them have a fungal disease called Black Spot. This disease is caused by warm temperatures and humidity. It will eventually defoliate the plant and weaken it severely. You either have to spray the roses with a fungicide to keep the leaves healthy, or you have to plant roses that are highly resistant to blackspot. Fungicides are somewhat toxic and need to be applied regularly during the growing season. It is important to understand that they are a preventative, not a cure--you have to spray the roses BEFORE they get the disease--spraying will not cure the leaves already infected.

For a good list of roses that are highly disease resistant, look at the 'Earth Kind' list of roses developed by the state of Texas. These roses were tested over a long period of time to choose varieties that look good and bloom well with little use of chemicals.

As to the brown flowers, you may have another rose disease called Botrytis. This is a disease also prevented by fungicides, so if you spray for Black Spot disease, that should take care of the brown petals as well. Another cause of brown petals are a pest called Thrips, which are a very tiny insect that likes to rasp the edges of rose petals. They require frequent applications of pesticide to prevent. You can tell if you have thrips or not by shaking a flower over a piece of white paper. If tiny bugs will fall out of the flower and show up on the white paper--those are thrips.

Another way to go is, as before, plant types that are not so affected by Thrips. Thrips tend to prefer white and other very pale colored roses.
Reply:Home dept. Call the garden shop, and talk to the rose person, they can tell you what you need and how to do it. If yo bye plants there, if they die, or do what yours is doing they will replace them up to one year.
Reply:The black spots on your leaves is called Black Spot disease and you can get a liquid for this and you can get it at Wal-Mart and other nursery's. Your leaves are also turning brown and yellow, just spray them and make them all well.
Reply:they are not dead its a type of rose!
Reply:It will only be a time that the roses will be attacked also. It sounds like you might have aphids eating at them. or a it might be blight. or fungus that attacks the leaves.

When is the best time to trim back knockout roses in Nebraska?

I have knockout roses that are getting rather big. When is the best time to trim them back in Nebraska? Fall or Spring?

When is the best time to trim back knockout roses in Nebraska?
you should have done them prior to winter, and then again at the end of summer, then you will get maximum flowering
Reply:We just look for them to start greening up. Just did them last weekend in wisconsin.

I have knockout roses by my porch. What is the proper way to trim them.. they look bad at bottom?

The knockout roses have been beautiful but they are tall and the bottom of them are looking slim. I was wondering how to prune them or cut them back to promote growing but not kill them where they don't bloom again. Any suggestions, websites with instructions? Thanks

I have knockout roses by my porch. What is the proper way to trim them.. they look bad at bottom?
Its hard to kill the Knockouts but I would still wait until it cools down before pruning them. Maybe another month or so.

Its best to do the pruning on them in April-May. If you keep cutting them back to about 3-4 they stay nice and full.
Reply:This site says that the usual advice for pruning roses doesn't apply for Knockout roses:

http://www.justgardens.cc/pruning_for_sp...

My experience is that you can trim off top growth anytime %26amp; it will encourage bushier growth %26amp; more blooms. Knockouts are tough!

Good luck! Hope this helps.
Reply:I just dead head my Knockouts by plucking the spent flowers off because you don't prune Knockouts like you prune other roses. As a matter of fact, your not supposed to do anything to them at all. However, if you have stems that appear to be dead or dying then feel free to cut them off. Also, trimming your Knockout in Jan. or Feb. will help to promote a fuller bush for next season. If you've been hot recently, they are probably responding to the heat. Mine were looking a bit sparse as well, but now that temps are dropping they are filling back out.

Oh, if you like Knockout roses then you will probably like these. The Knockout roses has been placed in a category of roses called "Earthkind". If you are interested here is a list and information about Earthkind roses that are very hardy, disease resistant, and self sufficient. Anyhow, here is the site. You may find it interesting.

What does a Charlotte red rose look like? How does it compare to other red roses?

We are planning a wedding and the florist will like to use Charlotte red roses. We want high quality roses -- something better than the roses at the corner grocery.

What does a Charlotte red rose look like? How does it compare to other red roses?
The Charlotte red rose blooms to a fully open, large head making it an ideal choice for wedding bouquets, flower arrangements and table centerpieces.

How do they make new roses and cross roses?

hi i am just wondering how do they make new roses cause it just facinates me does anyone know?

How do they make new roses and cross roses?
Here is a link explaining this complex procedure.. Hope you can follow just what it is that plant breeders do to get the desired outcome. It is pretty scientific and takes many years and many generations to achieve one single new variety that will be registered and make it to market.

Reply:Your very welcome! Good luck on your adventure and keep at it, it will be alot of fun. Who knows, one day we all might be purchasing a new hybrid variety that you have created...Billy Ray Report It

Reply:Not a human been can make a rose flower, nature does, the only thing that humans can do is work with rose plants and also there several ways how they do, for example:

1- plant seeds in a small amount of dirt

2- cut a small piece from another rose plant and close it inside of a semi dark plastic bag with a small amount of water and wait for several days for the small plant to make roots and new leaves, so after you seen them coming out, take it out and planted with small portion of light and wait until you have a plant.

3- to combine the colors and possible to change it, you need to have a younger plant, cut a piece from another and from the first one, small branches and then connect and cover the joint with a piece of cloth and wait to see if it was accepted. Experiment. The main plants will not die for that.

god.. check with my mother she has them taking over her fields.. EVERYWHERE and going wild and crazy.. She cuts them and they keep doubling it's driving her crazy. Actually ... Cut them back and they come back stronger and bigger.

When, are for how long will my wild roses bloom?

In early spring, I transplanted 3 wild roses from my road to my garden. Most of there leaves fell off, the plant looked un waterered, dead, but I took good care of it and it made a great recovery, all the leaves are finally back. I took 12 more wild roses and made there own flower bed for them. Most of the leaves are already crackly, and falling off. I transplanted them about 2 weeks ago. I suspect that most of the leaves will probably fall off anyway, and I think 2 of the wild roses might die, because almost all of there leaves are fallen. Some new leaves are finally starting to grow, and they are a nice green colour. I know they won't bloom this year, but next year, when, and for long will they bloom? They are about a foot to 2 feet tall, and the ones on the road have been blooming for about a month, but there arn't very many blooms because no body dead heads or trims them. Thanks:) And one last thing, I have sweet peas, and are about 5-8 inches tall. When will they bloom? Thanks.

When, are for how long will my wild roses bloom?
In my experience wild roses bloom only once a season in late spring to early summer. However, although they usually only bloom once it tends to be a good show and can last a while. Your roses have dropped their leaves because they are in shock. Usually they will pull through with a little extra TLC and frequent watering. Don't give up on the two that have completely defoliated because Roses are pretty resilient and tend to bounce back. Anyhow, hope your roses pull through. Enjoy.

I've never grown sweet peas so I don't know. Sorry.
Reply:Species roses bloom only once mostly but they can be in bloom many weeks.

The prairie rose, Rosa arkansana, from North America is possibly what you have collected. They bloom often in June or July depending on weather and can continue into Aug on a small compact plant.

There are many other species that yours could be;

R. canina the dog rose does not repeat and gets pretty large. Introduced from Europe.

R. carolina the Carolina rose does not repeat but flowers from May to July. Native.

R. nutkana the Nootka Rose from the NW flowers May to July.

The Cherokee Rose is another fairly common wild rose, R. Laevigata. This one goes tall and is a climber in warmer areas. Flowers in April. Introduced from Asia.

Whats the best way to remove the dead roses from my rose bush?

I have a rose bush outside of the house I just bought. Some of the roses bloom and then die off. There are quite a few dead ones on there now. How do I care for it properly? Thanks!

Whats the best way to remove the dead roses from my rose bush?
If you like to see your plant in bloom, the best time to trim is when your blossom begins to change Color or the petals begin to fall. I use rose trimmers, bur a sharp pair of scissors will do. be sure to trim back to the....y.... part of the stem. This way you will not harm future growth and new stems with buds. did you know that roses like very ripened chopped banana peels just carefully put in the root area with about 2' of soil over them ? Enjoy
Reply:On your bush look for the set of leaves that have a four-leafed branch, where your roses bloom.Use sharp scissors,or preferably secateurs.Cut on an angle, then roses will grow again at that cut. They take about six weeks. Also cut out dead growth. When watering wait until ground is dry, water well, and then leave until ground dries out.If you get Aphis(bugs) wash off with soapy water.
Reply:Ideally, you want to remove the rose just as it is opening, that way the plant doesn't waste resources on it. Any type of scissor will do nicely.

Some rose specific plant food probably would not hurt either.
Reply:Rose food and cut back with scissors.

Are my roses going to live through the winter?

This is the first year I planted roses. I live in PA. Will they survive well through the winter?

Are my roses going to live through the winter?
I have read that you should not prune any flowers within 6 weeks of the first frost. I live in Michigan. I don't do anything to mine and they are fine. But they are in a corner. Some people put those white rose cones over them and mulch them. You have to be careful about using leaves as mulch because this can cause some diseases.
Reply:mpst do, although they may loose throt folage. Mulch the root systems with heavet mulch, before frost arives, they should be fine in the spring.
Reply:Take a wire plant holder like you use for tomato plants, looks kind of like an upside down funnel in wire form. push it into the ground around the roses, fill it with leaves and mulch, and cover with a plastic lawn and leaf bag tied down at the bottom. they should survive quite well. I did this in Michigan where it's even colder and mine survived very well!
Reply:I use the rose cones, they work fine, you have to winterize them with one of the many methods or they will likely die.
Reply:The best way to keep your roses alive is

to cover them with hay or something that will keep the ice off them....Ashes are a good nutrient to make the rose bushes bloom
Reply:If you planted for your climate zone, they should be fine. I live in a much harsher climate than anything in PA and my roses are thriving. And I don't do anything special too them other than feed them during growth season. Roses are hearty.
Reply:No they will not survive. The harsh cold air and freezing temperatures will kill them.
Reply:yes they will.. roses are very hardy plants.. if you planted the roses just this last summer, a good rule of thumb is not to cut them too much the first year... i don't know your area.. but i prune in Jan-Feb (call your local nursery to find out the time for your area) when it is time, do a minimal pruning.. and take all the leaves off.. you still want the roses to go dormant.. and add some rose fertilizer.. if you live in a snow area, add some mulch to the ball (on the bottom of the rose is a knot, then the branches come up.. this is basically the heart of the rose..) Make sure you move it away come spring..
Reply:they always come back in the spring
Reply:they come back in spring
Reply:I didn't do anything to my roses and I'm in zone 3

I probably could have mulched them, but what with the weird weather and all, we haven't had a -30*C winter for about 10 years. (-20*C is what a cultivated rose can endure. If you get -10*C in winter, then mulch. Otherwise, you'll be okay.)

The wild roses are like weeds around here, and I have a bank of them that I haven't touched since we moved to this house 13 years ago. They're like 10 feet high! and bloom like crazy all June.
Reply:trim them back now so they can go dormant. cover them when it feezes. they should be fine.

Know who knows what the different colors of roses mean?

I know that red stand for love and yellow means friendship. But, what about colors like white and pink? I'm planting some roses in my front yard. I would like to give it a nice setting. What do you think?

Know who knows what the different colors of roses mean?
White is purity and truth. Pink is new love or young love. Yellow is friendship or jealousy. Most people don't think about the meanings of the rose colors, even though I do...and obviously you do too. Most people are drawn to their fragrance and their beauty, and what is pleasing to the eye. I prefer to go for meaning and what is pleasing to look at, so I choose the meanings most important and then colors that go well together. Good luck planning your rose planting!
Reply:WHITE: Loyalty, penetrating and platonic love. Able to captivate secret thought, love stronger than death.

PINK: Grace, gentility, elegance and refinement. The rose of sweet thoughts.

I think those would be pretty together.

How long will it take to start seeing roses from my rose bushes?

I purchased 4 rose bushes from Walmart. I planted them this weekend but no where does it tell me how long it will take before I start seeing the roses. I am sort of impatient when it comes to these things :)

How long will it take to start seeing roses from my rose bushes?
first it depends whether u planted them in the right place - roses like sun. so if a place is shadowy u might never see the flowers. also how big the rose bush was - was it just a few sticks with buds, a bew sticks with leaves or the whole bush? was it sold in a real deep pot? or in a plastic bag? if it was a real bush in a pot and u planted it correctly u will see flowers this autumn. if those were a few sticks in a plastic bag - hopefully next year. if they don't die in winter
Reply:let your bush be deflowered

Seven dust or a systemic herbicide.

What color roses are most appropriate for sending your sympathy?

I would like to send my sympathy to my aunt who just lost her beloved pet. What color roses are most appropriate for sending sympathy?

What color roses are most appropriate for sending your sympathy?
Pink or yellow.

Red suggests romance and white suggests marriage. Pink or yellow seem neutral in that sense.

Edit: http://www.proflowers.com/flowerguide/ro...

According to this, it atcually seems pink, yellow and/or white is most appropriate.
Reply:White for peace and calm, or maybe an off-white... That's very thoughtful of you.
Reply:I think white would be appropriate. White is a pure, untainted color.
Reply:the ivory colored roses. they are very subdued and thoughtful.
Reply:I was thinking either white or pink. Both are calmer more subdued colors for such occassions while the red or yellow roses would be too bright for sympathy.
Reply:yellow
Reply:Yellow symbolises friendship so perhaps that is the most appropriate - alternatively, what is her favourite colour? Many people don't know the 'real' meanings behind flower colours, so if you got her something she simply liked it would be just as appropriate (well, anything but red...).
Reply:neutral colors work well because they look nice and it dosent seem faked

neutral colors like light pink and white off-white will work best
Reply:best check with the florist x x
Reply:i don't know about roses but i recently sent (from calyx and carolla) a beautiful flower called "birds of paradise" for a friend who lost her newborn. it's an orange flower that looks like a bird with its nose up to the sky.

Where can I buy calla lilies and roses by the stem in Northamptonshire?

I'm getting married in December and would like a bouquet of Calla lilies and pink roses, with calla lilies and cream/ white roses for the bridesmaids. The buttonholes will all be cream roses or calla lilies. The only place I've found can't guarantee the colours and wants a lot of money per stem. What can people suggest? We want to make the bouquets and buttonholes ourselves.

How do I keep my bunch of roses alive longer?

My partner bought me a dozen beautiful roses for my anniversary. They have been sitting in a vase at my desk for 3 days (I used the flower-food sachet that the florist gave me) I am going to take them home with me today though and was wondering if anyone knew how I could keep them alive for as long as possible?

How do I keep my bunch of roses alive longer?
I always put a fizzy asprin in the water with my flowers, it keeps them alive for longer. Also, if there were any carnations in the bunch, throw them out because they'll kill all the others...
Reply:A table spoon of sugar, another of salt, into the water, should be doing the trick!

Good luck!
Reply:put quarter of a glass of lemonade into the water it works wonders.
Reply:Every day replace the water with ice cold water - it refreshes them like you will not believe!
Reply:Roses are trickier to preserve than other flowers. Transport them back home with the stems wrapped in wet newspaper in a waterproof bag. It is essential to shorten the stems immediately when you get home by at least two inches with a sharp knife or secateurs. Cut at an angle. Put them in a bucket of tepid (not hot or cold as this would give them an additional shock) water up to their necks for an hour. Transfer in a vase which contains plenty of water and half an aspirin tablet after removing any leaves likely to be underwater. Display in a cool place away from heat, central heating or sunshine but well lit.

Top up water daily. Enjoy!
Reply:a few tablets of Aspirin in water is the best and popular way to keep them for months
Reply:they die eventually give them plenty of sunlight and water!!
Reply:I dont know if you'll be able to get them in time but heres something you should buy for future- Debbie Meyers Evertfresh Green bags. I swear by them, they are amazing. You can order them from the QVC shhopping channel online. I've copied the product info for you-

Preserve fruit, vegetables and even cut flowers with a set of 50 Debbie Meyer's EvertFresh Green bags! They work by absorbing the ethylene gas expelled from different fruits and vegetables as they ripen. The bags also breathe to prevent moisture formation and control humidity levels. They help to filter out Ultraviolet light too - all of which will help to prolong the life of your produce and cut flowers!

Hope this info is ok, new at this! xx
Reply:Put half of an aspirin into the water, and cut the bottom of the stems diagonally across. This will keep them fresher for much longer.
Reply:change water each day and give em an aspirin
Reply:flowers like lemonade
Reply:i am really sad 2 tel u zat flowers is a perishable good but u sure can try u're best 2 keep it as fresh n as long as u wish by iusing z following method:

1 put it in a vase of water but not 2 much so that it decays!!

2change z water each 2 days!

3 put some vitamins %26amp;minerals i z water of the plant

4 let z flowers get a little of suu rays but nt 2 much soo zat it dries up!

5 a flower is fragile so take great care of it %26amp;pay attention

6 don't let 2 many people touch z flowers..
Reply:My mum used to put them in lemonade. Don't know why but they looked fresher for longer.
Reply:Hi, try putting some sugar or lemonade into your water, Beleive me it works. Lucky you, Roses a sign of true love. X
Reply:ADD A TEASPOON OF SUGAR TO THE WATER
Reply:first make sure you keep fresh water in them and go get more of the flower-food. Alos, try to keep them in a cool place. If you ever notice at the florist they have them in a fridge this is because they do better in cool air. Also, make sure you cut the bottoms of the roses at a slant. I always end up saving one of mine and getting that little green thing that they have around the ones that are sold as a single. Then I hang it upside down on the mirror of my truck. This actually makes it last twice to three times as long as the rest of them. I'm not saying hang them all upside down but, you could do one of them....
Reply:CONGRATULATIONS on you anniversary, usually when I get flowers, I put them in a vase of WARM water, and add a teaspoon of sugar. If you want, why don't you pick one of the roses and press it in a heavy book, that way it will last forever.
Reply:Asprin and or sugar in the water helps. ALso the cooler the roses stay the longer they last.
Reply:1. Cut the stems before putting in vase.(very important)

2. Change water every morning.

3. Add 2-3 tbsp. of sugar and aspirin into water.(every morning)

All these measures together will help. Quaranteed.
Reply:formaldehyde will keep them for as long as you want !

I'm sure florists will be able to help.
Reply:Put sugar in the water
Reply:I find using lemonade instead of water works. I have managed to keep flowers for longer by doing this. Don't ask me how it works, it just does.
Reply:Crush the stems(bottom inch or so) and change the water regularly.Don`t put them too close to a heat source but if possible put them in as much natural light as possible.
Reply:An old florist's trick is to put them in lemonade. I suppose it's something to do with the dissolved gas - if so, fizzy water should do as well.
Reply:I think putting sugar in the water works pretty well -

but you must replace the water every couple of days and trim the base of the stalk at the same time in a diagonal fashion.

Make sure the vase is near the window at all times too
Reply:Make sure you cut the bottom of the stems first...this is said to keep them for longer.
Reply:Add a little 7-up (canned drink) to the water and they will last longer, also why not keep a couple tie them together at the stem hang them upside down in a dark airing cupboard until they dry out, this way you can display them as dried roses, do this while they are fresh and they should keep a nice colour.
Reply:During the day put paracetamol and a spoon of sugar and in the evening put them into the bath with full of cold water and leave for a night and in the morning cut 1 cm of each end of a rose.

but the thought, and the love that carried them to your door, should never fade away.

How do i preserve roses without pressing them?
i think you have the right idea with hanging them upside down. i did the same thing when my grandma passed and we preserved every flower possible, but it's been a long time....i know you can get a preservative from the craft store such as "Michaels". give them a call. they can help you with the process.
Reply:After the hanging upside down, spray the hell out of them with hair spray! This way they will not fall apart or brake.
Reply:you can hang them upside down and they will dry out.

if they are not upside down they will wilt.

you can hang them in any light and yes it works thats how i do it.

i have roses when i was 16 and im 23 now.
Reply:I've had good luck hanging them upside down to dry. Stay in good shape for some time. I use wire to wrap around the stems and hang them, where they don't touch each other. Any dry place will do, I've dried them inside the house and in the garage.
Reply:Yes....hang them upside down for quite awhile until they are completely dry and then just put them in a vase.
Reply:My condolences, sorry for your loss.

Hang them upside down, don't know that dark matters but my best friend was killed last fall and I saved some of his flowers with wire hung upside down, they dry out very nice, they are stiff, but full. You could do something with them later (after fully dry) if you so choose.

*Upside down doesn't collect as much dust*
Reply:I used the borax method when preserving my bouquet from my cousins wedding- this site tells you how to do it, and other methods of preservation too. It's nice you want to do this!

What is the best way to dry roses?

I recieved a dozen of roses from my love the first of feb. They are still alive! I want to dry them to have them forever. What is the best way to do this. Just tip them upside down?

Thank you!

What is the best way to dry roses?
Tie a pretty ribbon around the stems and hang them upside down in a low humidity room. When dried out, go to your local wholesale store or arts and crafts store where you will find sprays especially preserving (sp?) and shine. They're not expensive and you can use them for other tasks! Have fun!
Reply:Put them in a cool room where the humidity is quite low. Over a period of a day or so, they will dehydrate and get dried without getting damaged.
Reply:i found just hanging them upside down works and then once they are somewhat dry take one or even a few and sitck them between the pages of a heavy book like a dictionary or something. this way they stay protected and u can always have them
Reply:i to hang them upside down

to protect after drying i spray thme w/ hair spray to hold the petels on longer
Reply:put them in the dark to keep from fadung and good air circulatuin upside down to help keep shape

How can I make good rose hips tea from real roses I get?

I've got all these roses from last week. I think you dry them or cut the top or something but I'm not having luck finding instructions. Indians has such cool rose-water-like juice. That or rose hips tea would be great, and is it only with red or can I do it with the other colored roses too?

How can I make good rose hips tea from real roses I get?
Rose hips are the pomaceous fruit of the rose plant, not the flower. You cannot make rose hip tea from roses. You could, however, attempt to make rose water. I don't think color matters, as long as they are a fragrant variety.

Rose Water, Method #1

This recipe is the more traditional way to prepare rose water. Though it's a little more involved, its fun to do and the results are outstanding. You can make a quart of excellent-quality rose water in about 40 minutes. However, if you simmer the water too long, you will continue to produce distilled water but the rose essence will become diluted. Your rose water will smell more like plain distilled water, rather than the heavenly scent of roses.

Be sure you have a brick and heat-safe stainless steel or glass quart bowl ready before you begin.

Ingredients

2-3 quarts fresh roses or rose petals

water

ice cubes or crushed ice

1. In the center of a large pot (the speckled blue canning pots are ideal) with an inverted lid (a rounded lid), place a fireplace brick. On top of the brick place the bowl. Put the roses in the pot; add enough flowers to reach the top of the brick. Pour in just enough water to cover the roses. The water should be just above the top of the brick.

2. Place the lid upside down on the pot. Turn on the stove and bring the water to a rolling boil, then lower heat to a slow steady simmer. As soon as the water begins to boil, toss two or three trays of ice cubes (or a bag of ice) on top of the lid.

3. You've now created a home still! As the water boils the steam rises, hits the top of the cold lid, and condenses. As it condenses it flows to the center of the lid and drops into the bowl. Every twenty minutes, quickly lift the lid and take out a tablespoon or two of the rose water. It's time to stop when you have between a pint and a quart of water that smells and tastes strongly like roses.
Reply:Don't use just any roses you get to make rose hip tes. Most roses have a lot of insecticide still on it. Only use rose hips or rose petal that you grew yourself or bought for food. Rose hip and roses are two different things. Rose hip is the fruit that follows after the flower petals fall. Thats the round green thing on the rose plant. Just steep them with what ever, like tea. It has a lot of vitamin c.

Is it necessary to remove clematis and roses to create a raised flowerbed?

neighbour reckons we should cover it all up and everything will be fine clematis is fairly well established same goes for roses will it grow back through ?

Is it necessary to remove clematis and roses to create a raised flowerbed?
The clematis will be fine but not the roses. You can try to dig them up but it's not usually too successful. Burying them deeper will bury the graft and you'll probably end up with a lot of shoots from the rootstock.

**
Reply:I don't know about clematis. But, I have experience with roses.

If they're dormant (middle of winter), you can actually cut the rose bush back to foot-hight canes and dig the plant up. Then plant it back again after building up the bedding as a bareroot. I did this when I had a planter reduced in size once. I had to move the rose back, because it was too far up front in the planter. It came back just fine the next year.

If you notice, most roses can be bought as bareroots from a nursery. They're pretty hardy when in the dormant stage. Don't do it when they've already started sprouting, though. That kind of shock can kill the plant.
Reply:Yes they will both grown back, they will push their new growth up through the soil and re-grow. You could always incorporate a climbing frame for them to grow up and give extra height to the raised bed creating a layered bedding effect. We've done this and it looks very nice with the clematis and roses in the background plus we can change the bedding plants every year, if they are annuals that are plants.

Hope this helps and have a good evening/day ;-)
Reply:Clematis should be absolutely fine as they recommend you to bury the bottom buds anyway to allow them to grow back if they ever get clematis wilt - not so sure about the roses it would depend what type they were - if climbers I woudl say you'll be fine otherwise a bit of a gamble but should be ok. I'd give it a go.
Reply:Won't do the clemantis any harm at all.

The roses will throw out side shoots if you cover their crowns, so it isn't such a good idea.

You can try to lift roses and replant them when they are dormant during the winter, but the results are less than spectacular if they survive.

How can I tell if my mini roses are redy to be pollinated?

... Unless you are trying to cross pollinate 2 different plants, you do not need to hand pollinate a miniature rose bush. It will grow and bloom all on its own.

How do I save my dieing mini roses?

How do I save my dieing mini roses?
"Every plant I buy dies! I don't know what I am doing wrong!"

most likely your over watering them test the soil with your fingers if moist don't water till next day
Reply:If you have been following the instructions, have you tried any fertilizer formulated for roses? If they've been in the same pot for a while (or even just planted, but in top soil or non-prefertalized potting soil) then they could have run out of vital nutrients. If you do fertilize, do not over fertilize, as that can be just as bad (you can burn the roots so that the plant can't be revived). Also, is it in a draft? The temperature of the house may be off for the roses, and prolonged exposure to the incorrect temperature can kill them as well (they actually need the differing temps so they can go through their natural growth and hibernation cycles). Good luck and I hope they survive!
Reply:I'm not an expert, but are you watering them enough? If you are watering them heaps, be careful, you don't want to drown your plant. I suggest you repot it, because where you brought it from, people who watered it probably left the roots soggy when they gave it to you, as I doubt they have had any experience. I suggest repotting it.

Also look around on the Internet and find out if Mini Red Roses are meant to be indoor plants, or not.

Also are they already dead. If they have a bit of life left then you can still save them.
Reply:Next time you get a mini-rose, plant it outside and it will live for a very long time.

If it is dying, it's because they were not meant to be root-bound in tiny plastic pots.

If you pull it up out of the pot, you will probably see what looks like a pot-shaped mass of brown roots. Healthy roots in potted plants are generally white or light. When you water one of these poor, 'forced' little fellers in the original pot, with the decorative plastic gift wrap liner still on it, it will get root-rot.

In a desperate attempt to stop the mold from growing on the top of the soil, people take off the gift-lining and allow those rotten roots to dry, while still hopefully clinging to the foliage up top, which is using up every bit of the roots' precious energy to try to survive.

Get it out of the pot it came in. Get rid of the leaves and the rotted roots and plant the poor thing in a part of the garden away from other roses. Any time an outdoor plant is unhappy indoors, give it a chance with nature, as long as the weather is good.

It is not likely that any abused grocery-store rose can survive after getting root rot, but it's worth a try.

Plant your next mini-rose into the soil outside as soon as it comes home and you will enjoy it for years and years.
Reply:Mini roses are famous for getting fungus infestations-the leaves turn yellow, may have black spots. All the leaves fall off-then the whole plant dies. Get a spray bottle of anti-fungal plant treatment and follow the directions for application frequency. You may be able to save the plants you have, if not, start a spray schedule on new plants as soon as you get them.
Reply:Hi Emily, just don't do it only by the book. We're in Indonesia always think that they are live, so you must feel what is wrong by the heart. OK?

How do i dry and presereve my roses?

I just recieve a dozen red roses two days ago. and im hoping to keep them for memories and i want to try and preserve them so they will look there best after they die. But i was wondering how and when i should start drying them? And is hanging them upside down really the best way? Should i start hanging them now? please help!! Thanks!!

How do i dry and presereve my roses?
You should hang them before they start to drop petals or wilt.Spray them with hairspray first or there are dried flower sprays available at craft stores. But the best method is to dry them buried in cilica gel which is also available in craft stores. Follow the directions that come with it. Usually takes about 2 weeks.
Reply:Please don't hang them upside down, they will turn black. I have found the best thing for drying Roses or most any type of flower is Silica Jel, most craft stores have it, your flowers will last forever and look good too. It is very easy, and a plus is the stuff is reuseable. Hope I was of some help.
Reply:hang them upside down for few weeks - then spray them with hair spray.

thats it!

I have a box with all the rose buds that I ever got - I want to be my loved ones to sprinkle them in my casket before they bury me. So I can keep all the love and good wishes for eternity.
Reply:Hanging them upside down works very well, but a friend told me how to dry them like the people in the 1700s did. First you fill a vase with salt and stick the rose in the vase and envelope it in salt.
Reply:I alwayshang my roses upside down from a coat hanger out of direct sun. They last seemingly forever.
Reply:when my friend did them they looked nice...or you can press them between books but they look flat... i also heard something about silica gel and covering the roses with them but i dont know much about that
Reply:yep. hang them upside down now and just forget about them for a few months!

How can I tell if my miniature roses are wilting because of too much water or not enough?

The leaves are droopy and floppy, not dry and crunchy so it makes me think I have watered too much. What are some good guidelines for watering mini roses?

How can I tell if my miniature roses are wilting because of too much water or not enough?
check the condition or the roots by carefully tipping the plant out of its pot, you should see plenty of healthy roots.

dead roots are brown an may seem wiry

live roots are yellow, Orange or white and plumper.

if you see few live roots, the plant has probably been kept too wet,

droopy leaves also may occur in plants that are being exposed to very cool temperatures.

if the plants are moved to where it is a little warmer and they perk up then that may be the problem.

roses can handle it quite cold so i wouldn't necessarily recommend moving them to a warm location.

make sure they are not sitting in water,

make sure the water is not just running through when you water,

fertilize with a water soluble feed 1/4 strength once a month in winter.

give them some Epsom salts in the spring to deepen their leaf color.
Reply:Keep the water level a little less then half... Perfect amount for flowers.
Reply:In the winter, it may not need water but 2-3 times a month. If you're unsure, dig down about halfway between the side of the pot and the stem...stick your finger in. If it's moist an inch down, don't water yet even if the surface is dry. Also, start lifting the pot to get used to how it feels when it's just been watered, and when it's dry. Sometimes you can tell by the "heft" if it needs water - it feels "light".

In the growing season - spring and summer, it will need water more often.
Reply:you can buy a moister meter, miniature roses don,t like constint wet feet, so slow down on your watering, it will also make a differinets if they are in a pot or the grond.

Why is my cream rosebush now blooming pinkish red roses?

Outside my bedroom window I had some lovely large cream colored roses..Now all a sudden the roses are a completely different colour? It is far away from my other coloured rosebushes.

I still love them but, what a surprise.

Why is my cream rosebush now blooming pinkish red roses?
Loreli has hit it right.... you're probably seeing roses on canes that come from below the graft on your rose bush.... your cream rose was likely grafted to a hardy root stock to make it stronger .... sometimes the root stock sends out a shoot and if we don't cut it off, and it continues to grow, then we see a completely different bloom , and stem and leaves on our plant..... the sad part is that once this happens, the root stock will eventually take over andyou'll lose the cream rose completely, as the root stock will get all the food and water first.....

if you still get cream roses, then you should cut off all the stems that have the different rose ... all the way to the bottom of the plant.... learn to recognise the 'odd' shoots as they form and cut them off before they grow very big.....
Reply:Your rose bush is official love struck, head over heels, haha

A bird or sumthing has probably pooped some seeds onto your white roses, also if u moved recently it could also be that there were pink roses already planted before hand.
Reply:i feel sorry for you. but just be relax okay.

good luck.
Reply:its got to do with the PH of the soil and mineral content
Reply:Sometimes roses are cloned on to rootstock of a different rose and the plant reverts to the original rose.
Reply:Seems like a beautiful Surprise to me....
Reply:plants often change color due to the elements in the soil..

like nitrogen etc.

How do i care for mini roses?

I just planted miniature roses and am a novice at gardening. Do I need to to anything special to keep up with them?

How do i care for mini roses?
Just use an multi-symptom rose food that feeds and systemically keeps off insects. Miniature roses are easier in my opinion to grow than Tea roses, and are great accent or border plants due to good blooming and really unique colors. Good luck, I have had some of mine for over 20 years.
Reply:Mini roses are just like regular roses. If you provide them with lots of water and fertilize reguarly they will thrive. They do like good soil...like compost or rich organic soil.

The 3 most important factors are water, soil and fertilizer.

Be sure to use a good "Rose Food Fertilizer" ask for it at your nearest nursery.

If you live where temps get consistenly below 20degrees f. I would suggest covering them with some type of blanket. Otherwise just prune back and water 2-3 times per month during the winter months. They will come back.
Reply:From experience with 3 miniature roses in my yard in upstate NY I'd say you have to do very little. I used to hill them over winter but found that was unnecessary. I just trim off the dead wood in the Spring, fertilize them a little, and occasionally have to apply a systemic insecticide when the critters start chewing the leaves from the inside.

And, don't fertilize them late in the season to avoid promoting growth that will be killed off in the winter.

How do I keep my red roses alive?

I got some red roses 5 days ago, they're starting wilt. I put in the water the preservative that came with them. Since then I added some water. They're wilting more everyday, i don't know how to deal with flowers. What should I do about them? They're really pretty.

How do I keep my red roses alive?
Instead of putting the preservative in the water, add an aspirin or a little sprite or 7up. My roses usually last about 9 days before I see any sign on wilting. Also, when buying your roses, make sure you check them for wilting. Stores sometimes pluck off wilting petals.
Reply:Cut the ends and put them in hot water.

You could dry them out (before they are done) and admire them a bit longer.
Reply:Add alittle sugar to the water. Trim the bottoms on an angle
Reply:clip the bottoms and add an aspirin to the water

you'll get a few extra days out of them
Reply:If they are plants, keep them watered. Plants will go through a period of shock when transplanted. Roses are hardy. They should snap out of it. Don't over feed them with chemicals trying to save them.

If they are simply long stems, go with the answer above. Honey works even better than sugar

How can I transplant these wild roses into my garden?

Here is a picture of the wild roses, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_Prairi... . There are about 100 of them outside growing along the road and in the ditch. How can I transplant them into my yard? They are blooming right now, I transplanted 2 a couple of weeks ago, but they are not doing to good. They are alive, but are not blooming. What is the best way to transplant them and keep them alive and blooming?

How can I transplant these wild roses into my garden?
The most important thing is that you MUST take out almost all of the root system without disturbing much of it. Secondly, the soil that you place it into should have as much if not more of the correct fertilization that the original growing place had. Thirdly , the watering of the bush should be kept moist, but not overwatered for a rather lengthy (lets say a month) time so that the ingredients in the soil will have time to rot and feed the plant. i would suggest that you look into the organic gardening (a splendid magazine) website and see if you can get information there. Do as much background reading about roses as you can find. Then try again. Good luck.

Addendum: Forget about the flowering for now. The most important thing is to establish the continuous growing of the plant and let it take care of the blooms at a later time and in its own time.
Reply:Try to disturb and uproot them whilst they are more dormant, as this will stress them the least. OK, you already have some planted, but if you want more then I'd wait until fall time.

Disturb the roots as little as possible as well as add humus, well rotted plant material, into the planting hole. You could prune and remove some of the top growth, so that less energy is needed to maintain and grow there, whilst their roots are shocked and aiming to reestablish themselves. Add some bone-meal, if you can too, as this helps them grow away stronger and will also help them flower. This way would mean the forfeit of some flowers.

Those moved whilst they are dormant won't need such drastic action, as they would use winter and spring to settle their root systems, and regrow to some extent.

Prune off all spent flowers, so that they don't spend energy on producing rose seeds, instead they can focus on making more flowers for you - though the first year priority is to get them established, as good strong growers.

Roses are shallow rooted plants, and so don't allow them to dry out too much:this is where mulches help-garden compost (rotted) or heavily rotted animal manure:cow or horse dung should be fine- don't apply fresh, as it is much too harsh and ammonia will leak down to your rose roots.
Reply:The ones you have already planted should do fine next year. They will spend the rest of this summer establishing their roots. They are pretty hardy. Just keep them watered and you should be fine. If they are still alive now after moving them a couple weeks ago then you must have done it right.
Reply:Whether roses, or any plant, transplanting is very hard on them. So it is always best to move them as they are leaving their dormant period when they have had the first leaves begin to open but risk of freeze is past. However since you have them it is a good idea to cut off most of their canes to reduce transpiration. Without established roots they can loose more water through their leaves than they can acquire from their reduced root capacity. Cut the canes down to 1/3 their original length. It takes approximately 10 days to begin proper root growth so you must take care they do not become desiccated and a good root tonic like kelp emulsion or a preprepared tonic like Root 66 would help them grow new roots.

Sounds like Japanese Beetles, buy White Geraniums and plant around roses, I don't know why but it does work

Reply:i found the best way to get good roses is to spray them with formula 409, don't know why it works but its great stuff
Reply:I use Bug-Be-Gone, I forget who makes it, I think it is Scotts. The same company who makes fertilizer, not 100% positive. But it is called Bug-Be-Gone.

I have used it on flowers, shrubs, brush, hedges, small little trees I gow in those whisky barrels. It workd great kills of any bug that tries to eat it. It is easy to use, just put on a glove, grab a handful and sprinle it all over the plant. It also, dies not damage plants and they will grow back from the damage done by the bugs.
Reply:get some bug sprayy

=]
Reply:I use a grub control in the spring, then use sprays in the summer, japanese bettles start as grubs
Reply:Get a spray bottle and mix with water and 25% dishsoap and spray on the roses. You will see the bugs leave asap!!.
Reply:Tell them no!

Seriously, it really depends on what's causing your problems. Least damaging all around (and it works surprisingly well!) is just a good blast with the garden hose every day.

Other than that, you could consider a systemic pesticide -- that wouldn't be my choice, because of toxicity and resistance issues, but it's still a possibility.

I'd urge you to identify the critter(s) causing your rose problems and then figure out the least toxic, most targeted methods for control. Here are some starters:

Reply:The type of bug makes a difference. While you can spray BT on the roses and that will hurt most bugs, you want to know if it earwigs (meaning you need to clean up the ground more) or Japanese beetles (maybe hang a pheremone trap on the other side of the yard), or something else. It is good to only kill off what you hate, and not take out the bees and butterflies while you are at it.

How and when do you prune roses?

I live in California and moved into a house with beautiful roses- the rose bush is about 5-6 feet high. How the heck do I care for them? I tried looking in the internet, too complicated, can anyone explain it to me plain and simple? Thanks in advance

How and when do you prune roses?
I love roses too. If you want to prune them significantly, you really should only do it at the end of February or the beginning of March, because most roses grow on old wood and will begin setting their buds in March and April ... however, you can always prune off the old, spent roses, or let them turn into hips and have rose hip tea. Pruning is easy ... I was always told to prune just above where you have a set of at least three leaves ... pruning much farther down would be significant pruning. Try to wash your pruners in between rose bushes with rubbing alcohol to prevent cross contamination if your roses have any diseases. Don't water too much -- the leaves may turn yellow or get spotty if you water too much. As for fertilization and pest care, I recommend a product you can get at WalMart made by Bayer. It is rose food/pesticide that comes in liquid form that you dilute or pellets that you sprinkle around then water to activate, and it not only feeds the roses, but also helps with all kinds of rose infestations, including aphids, for up to six weeks.

Enjoy those roses.
Reply:prune them to just above a leaf bud, (where new shoots or leaves are emerging or where you can see a little reddish node) Try to pick one that is facing outwards from the plant. Don't be afraid of cutting fairly low down on the plant. The thicker the branch you have cut the thicker the new stems will be and so a stronger plant.
Reply:mwinter and kaz have good advise-you can prune them now but it will not bloom this year
Reply:Not sure where you are in CA but they have the Orange County Rose Society.

I am sure there is one in your county too

Pruning should be done now before it gets to warm.Cut just enough that it the hight you want.Prune new plants so that there roots grow faster.

I live in Las Vegas, what is the best way to plant roses?

I have the roses in a one gallon container, but know little about the transplanting, watering and best rose food.

I live in Las Vegas, what is the best way to plant roses?
Las vegas~! loved it when we were there so many years ago. best way i ever seen anything grown out there was in very large pots! keep them out of direct sunlight and water them in the morning, every morning !
Reply:Wow, I hope you're good at looking after roses in Las Vegas! Keep em damp (water everyday) and give them a regular prune after they've flowered. Cause you're in Las Vegas, I'd suggest they're not placed in direct sunlight as it'd be too hot, but part sun as they still need sunlight to flower. I don't know how cool it gets in Las Vegas in the wintertime, but that's probably the best time to transplant. Chop it back a bit to lessen shock and water well. A complete rose food from your local nursery should do the trick.

What can a dream about a garden full or roses mean?

Last night I dreamed that I was in a garden full of roses, nothing happened, I just walked around. There were only roses and grass...

Does this mean anything? Or was it just a nice dream?

What can a dream about a garden full or roses mean?
Perhaps, you have Spring Fever and desire more than the grimness of Winter.
Reply:Roses symbolize love. Are you in love? Married? Maybe it means you're about to find love. :)
Reply:Some say dreams are sent from a higher entity in order to guide us to what would make us happier. It depends on what importance You place in dreams and if they contain things that are in Your real world. Perhaps it's a look at the garden of Edan
Reply:roses are a symbol of love. it can mean that you're in love or about to be in love. or it could be just a nice dream. actually, if you go deeper and look at the color of the roses, you can see if it would symbolize friendship, etc.
Reply:You're happy, it's a good time to find a lover. Beauty, perfection. Good Luck.

How do you collect seeds from roses?

im learing how to breed roses and i dont know how to collect the seeds so can grow that species next year?

How do you collect seeds from roses?
If the flower has been pollinated it will turn in to what is called a rose hip. Wait till the hip starts to dry on the plant then harvest. Break open the waxy shell and there will be your seeds.
Reply:Never heard of that before, we always start cuttings.
Reply:You can collect the seed from the rose hip, but you will most likely not end up with the rose you began with. Your best bet is to propagate through cuttings because the rose you have now will not be the rose you will get from a seed.

How long after dead heading my roses will new blooms appear?

I live in So. Cal %26amp; just dead headed my roses... Now I am totally new to this so if this is a silly question I am sorry - but how long till new flowers appear?

How long after dead heading my roses will new blooms appear?
It really depends on the roses you have in your garden.

Some are described as continuous bloomers and are dead-headed only for aesthetic reasons. Some, like Hybrid Teas, do best when they are dead-headed about 1/4 inch above the lowest 3-leaf bract on the stem when the bloom looks bedraggled or when perfect to bring indoors, but before the petals have all fallen off. Regular dead-heading encourages new growth and a season of beauty. Some roses are called repeat bloomers and may not bloom again for several weeks, or only a couple of times a year.
Reply:When I deadhead roses, I cut them off as soon as thye have fully opened. I usually have buds all over the bush and the buds open constantly as long as I deadhead almost every day or as soon as a blossom is mature. If you have no buds I would not anticipate new roses for at least two to three weeks. There should be new flower buds forming all the time during the season. If you have waited to remove all the dead flowers at the same time, you might have discouraged new bud formation.
Reply:it should only take a couple of weeks.
Reply:New flowers will appear about in the springs.
Reply:They should be cut just above a five leaf . The new growth will come out there or at the next one.
Reply:the roses of my aunt was dried almost a year but when i Fertilized it by urine evry'time after a few weeks it was re-born to a new yellow rose"
Reply:You should see the new bud, of the new branch appearing, at the leaf base within a week.

I want to use them in my wedding because they are my favorite flowers. We haven't set a date yet so I would like to know when the fire and ice roses are in season so I can make sure they will be fresh (and hopefully cheaper).
