Gardening How to Protect roses in 20 degree weather?

I have roses that are in containers and we are expecting temperatures to drop to low 20's which is not normal for my area. Do I need ot cover them , bring then indoors or what.

Bringing them inside would be a temperature shock for them. Old sheets or blankets are enough to protect at that temperature. One other trick is to string christmas tree lights through them. The heat from the lights help to keep the roses warm enough and it also looks good
Reply:Where I live the temperatures regularly go down to 20 degrees in winter, on and off all winter. I have over fifty planted in beds in the garden and they just loose their leaves and go dormant for winter.

They are mainstays of English gardens and they get it a lot colder than I do here. My garden books say no problems down to 0 degrees or colder. If yours usually don't loose their leaves for winter because it is warm where you are don't worry if they loose their leaves this winter new ones will appear in spring.
Reply:Do not bring them in if you plan on taking them out after the freeze. This can harm the plant. Best thing is to insulate the root system. This can be done by placing the rose, planter and all into a larger container filled with leaves. Then covering the stems with a Styrofoam rose cone.Place a brick on top to hold cone on. Do not cove the hole on top of cone. So it can breath. Place it on soil or grass not concrete. Concrete will become colder than soil or grass.
