Interesting quesiton...

Actually if the plants we snow covered for the winter, they will probably be fine. Snow is an excellent insulator, and plants under the snow rarely freeze.

If, however, your plants were exposed to extremely cold weather, wind and other winter weather without being covered you may have some die-back of the canes which were exposed.

Roses here in Chicago are usually ok for the winter. (We had plenty of snow this winter), but sometimes have some die back because of the cold if they are unprotected.

You should know shortly if the roses will send out new branches If they start to show shoots they will be fine. If not, wait a few weeks. If no growth by then...sorry.

Reply:snow is the most wonderful thing for winter protection. THe problems with dying occur when the ground freezes and then you get warm winter days which start to thaw out the ground and then it freezes again at night and this cycle will eventually kill the roots.

Snow on the other hand keeps the temperature nice and even. The snow actually usually lands up not actually sitting on the ground but a few cm above it. It acts as great insulation keeping the rose bush cuddly and content as it sleeps through the winter and gets the rest it needs before it wakes in the spring and wows you with its lovely show.

the only time I worry about my roses is when there is not enough snow and usually any pruning that has to be done is above the snow-line!

The only time you should worry about covering them MIGHT be in their first year in the ground, and then it is more important to build a mound around the base than to worry about the canes higher up.
Reply:roses are quite cold hardy plus anything under snow is at 32 degrees so dont worry unless their is no growth by early or mid summer
Reply:I wouldn't worry about them....the Earth is like a blanket on the rose roots...it should be fine and bloom like it always has
