Why won't Roses grow in Chicago? 3 years ago i visited my sister on the east coast She had beautiful Roses.

I wrote down the names %26amp; ordered the from the same company my sister got hers from. They were a total bust. Last year I visited my brother in Washington State. He had great Roses. Wrote down the names, ordered from same company... another bust. I know I am planting them right %26amp; I know I am taking good care of them. So is it me or Chicago the Roses hate?

A ROSE IS A ROSE IS A ROSE... but not in my neighborhood, Mac. American Rose Socity rates Roses on a nation wide average. A great 9.5 Rose in New York may only be a 7 in Denver, yet overall the ARS rates it an 8 in it's rating book. Facy is different Roses do different things in different areas. A beautiful red Rose in Wisconsin becomes a bleached out nothing in Vegas. A healthy yellow in San Diego turns into a mildue mess in Walla Walla.

What you need is an expert on growing conditions for your neck of the woods. You need advise from a local, Chicago MASTER GARDENER. Contact U of I 's coop extension %26amp; get hooked up with a MASTER GARDENER who knows CHICAGO Roses. Bet next summer you knock them dead with your Roses.
Reply:I don't hun. But I can't kill mine using coffee grounds.

I don't know if this will help but I can tell you Roses do better where it is cooler...they don't good in heat. and I prune mine every year and put a clay pot or something that won't blow away over them in the winter also mulch real good too.

another issue is what kind of dirt are you planting them in. I went to Wal- Mart ...got the best I could find and dug a really big hole. put the good dirt in and added some coffee grounds. watered real good. Don't forget to separate the roots too. Hope this helps.

Sorry I made typos I am real tired.
Reply:I have a lot of roses and I live off Lake Erie. In the spring I start putting dried coffee grounds around them and a flower food. I deadhead them and prune and some years the weather cooperates with me and other years they don't. Some years roses don't bloom here but I just let them rest and the next year they are amazing. Take heed of the map the companies have for your climate. This is true for all flowers.
