I live in californis and between the record heat, massive fires in our area, (we were sucking smoke) and watering system break down my roses look like death. They were here when we bought the house. I was told the dirt needs to be refreshed? They are brown, losing their leaves, they were out of control(lots of dead canes all intertwined in the middle growing every which way. I am a compkete idiot when it comes to roses. Oh yea I have approx. 100 around the back fance and approx. 13 up around the porch. I think the ones at fence are called simplicities? Not sure about ones around porch.
Can roses be revivied after a hard hot summer?
Not knowing the temp in CA for the rest of summer into fall, I don't recomend cutting back as others said, this soon, unless you know that they will continue to grow for several months more this year. The reason why is because if too much good cane is removed, then new leaves will not form and this is the only way that plants are designed to grow besides their roots. You should remove by hand, all dead leaves and cut all dead canes to the base. When cutting rose canes, angle the cut so that when rain water falls, it does not touch the open end of the cut cane...... such as / - left top would be the uncut side, right bottom would be the cut side.
A drink of sun tea and or used tea bags is Good....VERY GOOD for roses as others told you! This works faster than rose food alone, or quicker with rose food combined. Just be sure not to over feed with the rose food because when the rose is already having "ill" or "weakened" health, the roses food can burn the roots. Remember the rose food directions are for roses in good health. Bone Meal is better right now than fish food, unless you use less fish food. Both can be done though.
One other thing that should also be used, alone or in combination with the others (tea, bone meal, fish food, and rose food) is Epsom Salt. Pour a small amount on your hand, the size of half a dollar, and sprinkle this under the rose bush. Keep doing this until it looks like a "light snow fall" from the base to about one foot out around the area. Then water in just till it "melts" and disappears. Continue to do this at least twice a month.
I have bought roses from garden centers that were ready for the garbage.....or worse, and this has saved them! When Epsom Salt is used under healthy roses several times per week, it causes small bushes to grow several feet per year with beautiful blooms. By using this trick, I have had a small 1 1/2 foot bush grow to 6 feet in just one season. Never water roses at night or two hours early morning before dawn is expected. This will cause rot and meldew.
Mulch is also a good way to keep moisture under the bushes. Before you put new mulch from the bag under roses, you should spread it out in the open air and sun for at least a week as new mulch is strong with natural chemicals from the wood and this is what causes the smell from the new bag, but this is not good for plants! Many times, this is the cause of plants dying in the Landscape, but few people "guess" that this is what caused a new garden to thrive! You can water this mulch pile, and several days to one week later, you can move it to under your plants.
One part Listerine Mouthwash, to two parts water, in a spray bottle, sprayed on to the roses, canes and leaves, and other garden plants will help keep them free of germs and disease. It also helps wash off the grime from the leaves to allow them to breathe, just like a face wash works on the pores on your skin. With 100 plus bushes, I suggest a hose end sprayer, just remember to mix 2 to 1. You can also add lemon dish detergent. Two TBSP per 20 gallon hose end sprayer. Because you all have suffered fire and smoke in CA, I suspect that this is also why the rose bushes STILL have dried curled brown leaves! They can't breathe! A green leaf can turn brown within several days, just to fall off, even if they are getting proper watering.
At the very end of summer, or during the winter months, you can then cut back 1 third of the bush. I know this sounds radical but all roses must be cut back each year by one third. This always kills me, but not the roses! They come back bigger, stronger and taller each year, dispite this much growth being removed! When this isn't done each year, the roses get smaller each year and the bush barely grows. Soon the bush dies as disease moves into the canes.
I know that if you trust this information, you will win, and I hope you do try, because they sound like they would be beautiful if their health is recovered!
Reply:your worry is genuine and i am facing about similar problem. contact some trained Gardner. other then that you can give them natural fertilizers like rotten leaves or dung but they should be properly converted as fertilizers (at later stage of decomposition). water then by morning only evening watering is harmful. 'blossom like your roses"
Reply:a good soaking from the hose and add a high pottasiam feed an hour later
Reply:If they are that bad, trim down to where you have about 3-4 inches from the ground, then work up the soil gently, do not up root the roots, add an organic mulch and mix into soil, or a fertilizer for roses, you may not get alot this year, but it will help bring them back for next year. If your climate is warm enough all year then its just a matter of time before they come back, they sell soil testers, and kits to see exactly what your soil is lacking.
Reply:Well the saying you have to be cruel to be kind applies in this case. You have a lot of work ahead of you. You need to trim them back preferably about two inches on the good branches. Remove all the dead leaves as this can cause the roses to decay. Make sure you cut them don't pull them or you will expose the inside of the stem if it rips and cause other problems. Cut away all the dead canes again cut them don't pull them. Water them with a plant food made for roses you can pick some up at any garden center. If you drink tea or know someone who does ask them to keep the USED tea bags for you. Sprinkle the grounds around the base of the worst rose bushes as this provides extra nutrients. Good luck!
