How can I keep my 1 year old Golden Retriever from eating my roses?

He loves my roses, the blooms expecially!

How can I keep my 1 year old Golden Retriever from eating my roses?
Train him. Put him on his leash and when he starts eating the roses gently pull him back and say no and distract him with a toy and reward him. Repeat this until he learns =)
Reply:Try mixing pepper with water then spraying it on the roses. Or maybe lemon and water... I dont rember...whatever one it is, they dont like the smell of it and probably wont eat it!

Reply:I had a problem with my cat eating my indoor plants, I sprayed them with bitter apple, it does not hurt the pet or the plant. She doesn't got near them any more.
Reply:there is a product that my family has used for similar things, and is available wherever pet supplies are sold; its called bitter apple. whenever you see him doing this, scold him/her and spray a little on its tounge. don't spray it on the flowers though, it will just rinse off if you water them or it rains. also, i'm not sure if it is entirely safe for the roses.
Reply:Fence it off? Unless you are around to catch him in the act every time (and scold him) you may want to look into an underground electric fence.
Reply:Is he outside for long periods of time, and eating the flowers because he is bored? Dogs shouldn't be left alone for long periods - they are pack animals and need to be w/ other dogs and/or humans. Also don't let the flowers be accessible to him - put up a gate so he cannot reach them.
Reply:you know i have one of them to and he eats my roses toooo. well sometimes i just feed him and sometimes i just let him eat them. the doc. said that they like to eat them from the sweetness some roses have so i just plant some more
Reply:I'm not sure how it would effect your roses but you can always sprinkle a little pepper on them. It's a sure deterant for wild animals in gardens!
Reply:Try using 1/2 and 1/2 solution of water and Lemon Joy detergent. Spray bottle.


This is great for keeping bugs away from the rose bush and when the dog tries to eat it, he will taste soap, unless he likes the taste of soap.

Reply:Mine likes dandelions. Just keep him with you, away from the roses. Or try spraying them with pepper spray. Or just let him have them.
Reply:Young Golden Retreiver = eat anything and everything. Say goodbye to the garden. There are some dog detractor sprays but I'm not sure they work.
Reply:I can't help but laugh (not that it's really funny) My Pit Bull likes to Pop the heads off my Marigolds!!





I tried fencing it didn't work and of course she loves water, so spraying her doesn't work either. HOWEVER, water with some lemon juice works very well. Every time my Pit got around the Marigolds she got a spray in the face with lemon/water mixture. After a few times she got the idea. I hope this helps.

Reply:Keep him away from the roses when you can't supervise him.





Train an "leave it" command with lots of stuff, not just roses. This can be done on leash. When he's sniffing something, or about to lunge for food on the floor, tell him "leave it" restrain him from getting it and call him back, then praise. Give him a little food (like 1/3 of puppy biscuit). When he starts looking and going back to you when you say "leave it" without having to pull or restrain him, he is finally understanding!





But this does not mean he will be perfect on this command. This command needs to be practiced a lot. It's easiest if you only feed him from his dish or your hand, because then he will learn that food on the floor is never for him.





Then take the "leave it" command outside whenever he is about to eat grass or whatever, and praise and treat him when he manages to stop.





When he is around the roses and goes for the roses, be sure he is on the leash. Use the leave it command, and feed him. Keep it up until you increase distance-- so for instance, he's one foot away from the rose, you call him to leave it when you're 6 feet away, and pretty soon you should have your golden be able to ignore roses.





A one year old needs lots of chewy stuff, so I suggest you give him chew toys, and sometimes feeding him before letting him in the yard or on walks will dramatically reduce the need to nibble on greenery.





Generally, even a dog that is trustworthy 90% of the time in the garden will always have the odd moment where he forgets the rules, so I do suggest keeping him away as much as you can when you are not around to keep an eye on him.





Another thing you can do is to distract him and keep him busy-- play games with him in the yard-- fetch, and work on offleash commands such as "come" and "away". Goldens love to do obedience and get attention and praise.





I taught my dog he was not allowed to chase things or grab at things when he was on leash using a basic "leave it" command and also teaching him cue words for "play" and "dinner time".





Dogs vary in what they will find distasteful. Bitter orange never worked on my dog and it was expensive, but I found that orange listerine worked like a charm to be sure he would never chew something again. I can't say what would be safe to spray on your roses to deter your dog.
