I uread somewhere ages ago that there are certain plants that are more susceptible to pests, etc. when planted next to the wrong plants. or whatever the reason was. can anyone elaborate on this and then tell me what to plant alongside which plants. I've currently got seeds for lilies, gladioli(sp) (basically I love bulbs and all large vibrant blooms) and roses already planted on their own.
also whats the best shrub to go with them? thanks
What arethe best flowers to plant with roses?

Reply:Roses love garlic, as well as other plants of the onion family, there are 100's of varieties you can use. I have garlic and thyme with my rose. You can have Marigolds and mignonettes with them.
I recommend a book called Roses Love Garlic by Loise Riotte, it is about the secrets of companion planting with flowers. Here is a site for the book http://www.gardenguides.com/books/rosesl...
You might want to see if your local library carries the book. The author has several other books about gardening as well. I recommend you check them out.
Reply:I do think there is something to it. Chives are great next to roses, and they are very complementary. Also, I like Lady's Mantle next to roses, but the LM can take over if you are not careful. Borage is another good rose companion.
Look up "companion planting lily" or whatever plant you want to look up (no quotes), and you'll get all kinds of information.
