What type of climate do you need to grow roses?

the long stem roses , do they need a cold temperature (like 50 degrees fahrenheit) or can they grow in tropical climates etc. ?

What type of climate do you need to grow roses?
You can grow roses successfully from sub-tropical climates all the way into Canada. Not sure where your writing from, but there are some things to consider if you're in a cold climate (own-root roses, not grafted and those that are known to be cold hardy). I'll leave it at that regarding cold climate roses.

Generally speaking if you can provide the following you'll be okay: 4-6 hours of sun, temps in the 70's and above. (In summers in the deep south roses can actually go dormant, but rebound as fall comes on).

Don't consider growing from seed %26gt; difficult. Buy established two-year old plants (see info below).

As a previous poster indicated, buy from a reputable dealer. It's tough to find roses for sale now because it's the height of summer and the stress on the plants from heat can be too much. Most roses hit local retailers (from nurseries to walmart) in mid-spring where ever you are. Mail-orders normally only ship direct to you from Feb-early April.

For some incredible roses, try Antique Rose Emporium...link below. Barrie.

Reply:They can grow almost anywhere in the US.

Jackson %26amp; Perkins (rose breeders since 1872) has a collection of articles about growing roses (see below).

Roses do grow from seed, but most people who aren't specifically trying to breed them grow roses from purchased bushes or cuttings, that have been specifically bred for disease resistance, long stems, nicely shaped and colored flowers, etc. Growing from seed, there's a lot more variation in quality.
Reply:They do best with temperatures in the 80's, plenty of sunshine, low humidity and fertilizer at least once a month when blooming.
Reply:In a warm or hot climate. I know so b/c my mother planted some in front of our previous home, and they grew very big and tall and of course beautiful.
