How deep must I plant climbing roses?

My house is only 2 yrs old and has the usual chipped stones round its immediate exterior.

I want to plant climbing roses against the wall, How deep must the soil be and how much room do the roots need to acheive their maximium growth,

Also how far can I spread the plants but still have full coverage fo the wall

How deep must I plant climbing roses?
You will have to set them back a little to miss the house footings.Dig a really deep hole and fill with good compost, the hole wants to be at least a foot in diameter so the roots can spread away from the footings.Put in the rose about 4 inches deep.Plant about 1 foot apart.Concrete can poison roots so make sure the hole is wide enough.

sorry but still ................... Y A W N !!!
Reply:If you can, remove the stone mulch, and work up the soil underneath for about a foot or so. When you're planting them, don't plant any deeper than they were growing in the container. Most roses are grafted, and the graft needs to be above the soil. When I plant anything, I use a handful of 0-20-0, or superphosphate, it just promotes root growth, and thats a good thing. Mix it with the soil that you backfill with. As far as spacing goes, if you are going to train them up..... you can plant them pretty close, no closer than 3 ft. though.
Reply:Doesn't really matter. The damn things just keep climbing out!

Get it? Climbing roses? Climbing out? Ah...nevermind.
Reply:Plant them so that the crown of the plant is just above the soil line.

"usual chipped stones"? What kind of stone? Are you talking about limestone gravel? If so - you may be in for a nasty surprise. Limestone gravel wil make soil more alkaline. Roses like acid. I would remove as much of the gravel as possible, and get a soil test done for ph.

How far apart depends on how long you want to wait. 4 to 8 feet. Closer if you don't want to wait years for full coverage.
Reply:Creating a garden next to house footings may cause damp.
